Yeonpyeong-dong’s ever-evolving residential landscape represents a prestigious high-end neighborhood in Seoul. Recently, the expansion of the Xincun and Hongda commercial districts has introduced vibrant commercial spaces into this traditionally quiet residential area, transforming its overall atmosphere.
The Y2 building is situated on a hillside adjacent to a main road within a secluded residential zone, enclosed by tall and sloped walls. Its corner location on the slope offers a unique advantage, as the building is visible from the alley entrance. This positioning invites the incorporation of design elements that enhance the building’s visual appeal, attracting attention and drawing people from the surrounding alleys.

The Y2 building features an open design to welcome visitors, comprising one underground floor and two floors above ground. Its architectural elements highlight the facade’s openness, with stairs and a front yard on the first floor, a terrace on the second floor, and a rooftop outdoor space—all positioned facing the street to create a lively environment.
A courtyard at the basement entrance allows natural light to penetrate into the deeper areas of the building. The use of brightly colored beige bricks enhances the building’s brightness and warmth, increasing visual appeal. The corner street leads directly to the external staircase, reinforcing the building’s inviting openness. This main staircase connects to a small alley, naturally guiding pedestrians inside.

Inspired by the pavilion tree commonly found at rural entrances, a local maple tree is planted in the center of the staircase, serving as a vibrant focal point.

The sloped terrain allows easy access to the basement from the front road through a gently inclined path. A moderately sized courtyard at the rear provides ample natural light and facilitates ventilation for the basement. The central external staircase minimizes travel distance within the building, while also exposing light, air, and social activity to the exterior, enabling diverse architectural expressions throughout the structure.

The window design of Building Y2 adds colorful and dynamic character, giving the facade a three-dimensional, expressive quality. The front-facing panoramic view of Yanxi Cave residential area is fully opened through French windows. Facing narrow alleys and neighboring buildings, various window shapes are employed to reduce any sense of confinement.
Distinctive features include two half-moon-shaped windows on the first floor and a circular window on the second floor, adding visual interest and charm—even when viewed from the small alleyways.
