Despite the growing adoption of BIM technology, its implementation in domestic projects faces several challenges due to incomplete application and limitations of imported software. The main issues can be summarized as follows:

1. Frequent changes in construction unit requirements have significantly increased the additional BIM workload for design and construction teams. Moreover, the lack of familiarity with BIM management among construction units has diminished their motivation to fully utilize BIM. This situation leads to higher work costs for design teams and reduces informal earnings, such as profits from construction changes.
2. The variety of BIM software available and the shortage of skilled personnel proficient in these tools pose a major challenge. Even when users are familiar with the software, many lack practical engineering experience. There are few professionals capable of selecting the appropriate software, integrating engineering data, environmental information, and construction insights, and conducting real-time analysis effectively.
3. BIM involves processing vast amounts of 2D data and generating 3D models, which demands high technical standards for data collection and processing. Currently, many companies still rely on manual data querying and uploading methods, resulting in lengthy cycles and low accuracy. This approach hinders effective interaction between data sets and integration between data and models.
4. BIM technology conflicts with China’s traditional extensive engineering management model. Imported from abroad, BIM was developed in countries with highly marketized, specialized, standardized, and regulated construction industries. There, project planning benefits from mature mechanisms and follows the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, where BIM is seamlessly integrated and projects rarely change once underway, ensuring consistent BIM application.
In summary, these challenges highlight the current obstacles in applying BIM technology domestically. We hope this overview provides useful insights for everyone interested in BIM implementation.
