How to Use BIM Technology to Simulate Bridge Construction Plans

In bridge construction projects, BIM technology plays a crucial role by integrating the complex conditions of the construction site, intricate bridge structures, and the detailed construction process. Through BIM, relevant models and animated simulations are created, making complex and abstract data more intuitive and understandable. To effectively apply BIM in bridge projects, it’s essential to consider specific construction techniques and project design schemes. By building BIM models and dynamic presentations, a clear guidance framework can be established for the construction process.

What is the process of using BIM technology for simulating bridge construction plans?

1. Data Preparation Stage

This stage involves assembling the project’s construction model components and designing related construction plans. These plans include project schedules, construction equipment and machinery deployment, material preparation, workforce allocation, construction methods, and applied technologies. Additionally, project construction rules and standards are established to guide the process.

2. Detailed Operation Process

1. Collect and organize on-site data to ensure that construction resources are sufficient and that the construction plans are practical.

2. Gradually input required machinery, materials, and personnel details into the model according to the specific construction plan. Continuously refine the physical construction model by supplementing the site environment, construction methods, and procedures. Incorporate construction progress and real-time site conditions, including the placement of large equipment. For example, Figure 2 shows detailed information obtained after completing the pier concrete.

3. Using the construction methods and equipment applications, dynamically simulate the construction process. Evaluate progress, investment, and safety aspects of potential construction plans. Select the most effective plan and create a BIM-based simulation demonstration. Construction project management personnel then review the model simulation.

4. Upon approval, focus on the more complex sections of the project. Apply BIM technology to simulate the construction plan, processes, and details with greater precision. Enhance key process data to generate visual dynamic simulations. This BIM-based disclosure prepares the team for upcoming construction phases.

5. Develop a comprehensive construction video using BIM technology and perform visualization disclosures, as illustrated in Figure 3 with the BIM disclosure model. Based on this disclosure, finalize the feasibility report and employ BIM technology to execute the detailed construction simulation process, as shown in Figure 4.

3. Key Aspects of Applying BIM Technology in Bridge Construction

1. Dynamic Simulation of Construction Techniques

Construction simulations should encompass the entire building process and highlight the technologies used during construction. Currently, software like 3DS MAX and Synchro-4D effectively represent construction technologies. Although Navisworks can simulate construction progress, it lacks the capability to simulate construction machinery and specific techniques. 3DS MAX supports numerous formats and allows further refinement and optimization of models originally created in Revit.

2. Simulation and Analysis of Construction

BIM technology is also valuable for simulation analysis, particularly in mechanics, optics, and safety performance evaluation of bridge structures. BIM provides component analysis models that serve as excellent demonstrations for detailed analyses. However, a significant challenge lies in file format conversion among different software platforms. To address this, Liu Xila and colleagues from Shanghai Jiao Tong University proposed using IFC format files to convert models into finite element analysis formats. While some modeling software can exchange information with analysis software, this capability remains limited, and data loss during transmission is common.

In summary, this outlines the process of using BIM technology to simulate bridge construction plans. I hope this article proves useful to everyone!
