BIM technology relies on software to unlock its full potential. As a completely new technological system, BIM cannot depend on a single software solution to deliver all its benefits. The software supporting BIM technology is broadly categorized into 13 types: BIM core modeling software, scheme design software, geometric modeling software, sustainable analysis software, mechanical and electrical analysis software, structural analysis software, visualization software, model checking software, deep design software, collision detection software, cost management software, operation management software, and release and review software. Among these, BIM core modeling software forms the foundation of the BIM software ecosystem, as the other 12 software types build upon the BIM models created by the core modeling tools.
Currently, the majority of mature BIM software originates from international providers, while the domestic BIM software market remains in its early stages. Locally, there are some BIM software products available in categories such as BIM core modeling, sustainable analysis, electromechanical analysis, structural analysis, deep design, and cost management. However, many other categories still lack domestic solutions. Most homegrown BIM software is developed on foreign platforms, resulting in limited localization and low market acceptance. Nevertheless, China has established a consortium involving research institutes and software companies to focus on developing localized BIM software. It is expected that a fully localized BIM software ecosystem will emerge in the near future.
