BIM Q&A: What Are the Top BIM Design Platforms and How to Choose the Right One?

The advancement and enhancement of BIM design rely heavily on a comprehensive software ecosystem. Currently, several international software platforms provide robust support for BIM technology, including Bentley, Autodesk, Nemetschek, and Dassault.

BIM Q&A | What are the BIM design platforms? How to choose a platform?

1. Bentley Platform
Bentley Systems, based in the United States, specializes in infrastructure software development. Its BIM technology platform is built upon MicroStation software, which has evolved into PowerCivil through 3D information integration. This platform is tailored for infrastructure design projects including highways, railways, bridges, and tunnels. The models created can automatically generate sectional analyses and element reports, offering a high level of professional integration, especially in highway design modularization. A Chinese standard version supports horizontal, vertical, and alignment design specific to Chinese users. Bentley’s suite of related products allows for secondary rendering and further development within the same ecosystem.

2. Autodesk Platform
Autodesk offers a diverse range of specialized BIM software targeting various industries, such as Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, Revit MEP, and Civil 3D. Each application performs well individually, and data interoperability across these products facilitates the handling of complex models. However, Autodesk’s focus primarily lies within the construction sector. Its underlying software architecture struggles with large model processing, limiting users who work with extensive highway models to segment-by-segment modeling, which can affect overall computer performance.

3. Nemetschek
Nemetschek owns Graphisoft, whose product ArchiCAD gained significant recognition during the era of 2D architectural design. After being acquired by Nemetschek, ArchiCAD transitioned into the BIM space with a user-friendly interface that aligns well with the workflows and thought processes of architectural designers. It holds a strong market share in architectural BIM but has limited applications in infrastructure sectors like highways and railways.

4. Dassault
Dassault, a French company renowned for its long-standing expertise in mechanical design, commands a strong presence in the automotive and aerospace industries. In the BIM era, Dassault’s CATIA software has expanded into the construction field to offer related solutions. CATIA excels in modeling, visualization, and information management. However, adapting engineering machinery design habits to construction workflows, insufficient support for existing design standards, and a low level of localization pose significant challenges for user adoption.

These are the four major BIM design platforms outlined to assist you in understanding your options. We hope this information proves helpful!
