BIM Architecture: Insights from the World's Leading Scientists Forum | Huajian Group Shanghai Institute of Architectural Design and Research

The World Top Scientists Forum, an event that bridges architecture and urban development, takes place here annually from October to November. While the conference sessions are relatively brief, we emphasize the everyday utility of architecture—aiming for it to continuously energize the surrounding region. Our goal is to unlock as many functions as possible for public use, dissolve rigid boundaries and enclosed spaces, and integrate building spaces into the broader urban service network.

To prevent overly long street façades, an outdoor north-south corridor is positioned at the building’s center, linking the street corner space to the north with the park to the south. The first floor’s public service areas combined with this north-south architectural layout blur the building’s boundaries, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the city fabric and become an integral part of the neighborhood.

Likewise, the public areas on the second floor — including conference spaces and hotel lobbies aligned along the north-south axis — open directly onto urban streets bustling with foot traffic. The building’s open spaces visually and physically connect to nearby squares and parks, creating a continuous urban fabric where the building and city coexist fluidly. This design fosters a stronger bond between people, the building, and the city itself.

“Wings of the Future,” “Green Aesthetics,” and the “Dual Carbon Goals” represent China’s commitment to the global community, while “Technology for the Common Destiny of Humanity” remains the enduring theme of the World Top Scientists Forum. As the venue for this prestigious conference, we have prioritized green design, making this the first public building project in Shanghai to pass the ultra-low energy consumption assessment. The building’s façade features light, dynamic feather-like horizontal lines that serve as a key architectural symbol. These gradient lines create a sense of movement, shifting fluidly as one’s perspective changes, delivering a harmonious yet varied visual experience on a grand scale.

BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics) technology is extensively incorporated throughout the building. Feather-shaped photovoltaic panels on the roof are strategically arranged to optimize renewable energy generation for the hotel. This design carefully considers sunlight angles, building form, and roof equipment airflow, resulting in a distinctive architectural silhouette. The hotel lobby’s glass roof on the south-facing sloped podium integrates photovoltaic cells to balance indoor transparency with shading needs, creating a comfortable and energy-efficient interior environment.

Sustainability and openness in large-scale public buildings are central to the design of the Top Science Forum project. We aim to create structures that invigorate urban life, harmonize architecture with the city and nature, and provide a sustainable aesthetic experience for the modern era.
