Tokyo’s Toranomon Hills Mori Tower ranks among the city’s tallest skyscrapers, now complemented by two striking new towers. The Toranomon Hills Office Tower rises 36 stories to 185 meters, while the Toranomon Hills Residential Tower stands 54 stories tall at 220 meters, making it Japan’s tallest residential building. These three towers are linked at their base by the verdant, accessible “Green Platform” — a terraced garden that seamlessly connects their first-floor spaces.

The design of the Tiger Gate Hill Residential Tower, Office Tower, and the “Green Platform” centers around lush, vibrant plant life. This greenery weaves the skyscrapers into their environment, fostering harmony with the surrounding community and paying homage to the established Tiger Gate Hill Forest Tower. Furthermore, the new towers incorporate the nearby parks and courtyards of Atago Shrine into their architectural landscape, enhancing the connection to nature.

At ground level, the two new towers fan outwards, creating a terraced courtyard that functions as a public “Green Platform” — a welcoming green space within the urban fabric. Designed for pedestrian use, this platform serves as a central hub connecting all three towers. It offers direct access to cafes and restaurants on the first floors of the residential and office buildings, as well as shops, lobbies, and collaborative workspaces accessible via a covered bridge. The Green Platform provides a rare oasis in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, combining lively activity areas with tranquil seating and a serene fountain, inviting visitors to linger and enjoy the balance between city energy and peaceful retreat.

The landscaping strategy carefully selects plant species based on their location, elevation, and exposure to wind. Trees and shrubs mainly populate areas below the third level, while shorter plants are positioned above. The office tower also features a rooftop garden, contributing to a total green area of 7,800 square meters across both new towers, including numerous tall trees. This extensive greenery achieves a remarkable 64.5% green space ratio, earning the highest S-level certification under Japan’s comprehensive environmental performance evaluation system, CASBEE.

Structural resilience is a key aspect of the design, addressing natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons. The buildings utilize appropriately sized components to absorb and mitigate seismic vibrations, much like traditional temple architecture. Both towers feature aluminum facades coated with white powder, creating horizontal partitions that double as sunshades and planters, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.

The Tiger Gate Hill Residential Tower houses 550 privately owned and serviced rental apartments, each with its own balcony. Residents enjoy shared amenities including a spa center, swimming pool, guest rooms, fitness center, and daycare facility. Prominent horizontal braces on the facade between floors 8 and 12 create additional green spaces, enhancing the tower’s connection to nature.
