However, the current shortage of versatile professionals and the absence of a comprehensive talent development system have significantly hindered the progress of domestic BIM modeling software.
1. Shortage of Versatile Talent
The development of BIM modeling software differs greatly from general IT software. This software is deeply rooted in the needs of engineering construction, combining engineering technology with information technology. Its development requires extensive work along with ongoing optimization and refinement, demanding a high level of expertise in both software development and engineering.
Currently, there is a serious lack of senior developers in China who possess strong engineering knowledge alongside proficient software development skills. Many professionals with engineering backgrounds lack software development capabilities, while software experts often lack engineering knowledge. This disconnect results in a shortage of well-rounded, high-level developers who meet the requirements of the domestic BIM software industry.
2. Absence of a Comprehensive Talent Development System
China faces a gap in BIM modeling software talent cultivation due to the lack of a structured training system. University programs often separate engineering construction from software development. Traditional civil engineering courses focus mainly on mechanics and engineering principles, with only a basic introduction to BIM software usage, but they rarely emphasize software development skills.
Conversely, students in computer science programs typically have little to no exposure to the construction industry or engineering practices. Although some universities have recently started exploring BIM talent development and are establishing new majors like intelligent construction, the fundamental solution to the shortage of versatile BIM software talent lies in creating a scientific and systematic BIM talent training program.
