BIM Q&A: Exploring the Key Stages in the Evolution of BIM Technology

The concept of BIM technology was first proposed in 1975 by Professor Chuck Eastman, who introduced the initial prototype of Building Information Modeling. Since then, this concept has been continuously refined and expanded, ultimately evolving into the widely recognized BIM technology we know today. Let’s explore the key milestones in the development of BIM technology:

BIM Q&A | What stages has the development of BIM technology gone through? History of BIM Technology Development

(1) Early 2D CAD

In the early days, 2D CAD technology was primarily used as a computer-assisted drawing tool, replacing traditional manual drafting. It employed wireframe modeling and maintained the standard three-view representation for components, significantly improving drafting efficiency. At this stage, CAD was essentially a digital tool for creating three-view drawings.

(2) The Era of Surface Modeling and Solid Modeling

Starting in the 1970s, 3D modeling technologies gained popularity, beginning with surface modeling.

Surface modeling focuses on creating visual representations of an object’s exterior and contours. These objects could be mechanical parts like engines and flanges or complex organic shapes such as animals. Although surface models define the shape through external curves and surfaces, they lack thickness and quality attributes. This limitation can result in geometrically or physically inaccurate models, leading to the emergence of solid modeling.

Solid modeling is a computer-based technique for creating accurate 3D solid objects. Its goal is to ensure that every surface is geometrically consistent, simulating objects both internally and externally. This allows for the generation of cross-sectional views of the modeled object. Solid modeling automates complex engineering calculations and was initially used for planning and verifying mechanical processes and assemblies. Over time, its applications expanded to interior design, 3D printing, video games, and film production. Today, solid modeling remains one of the most widely used modeling techniques.

(3) The Era of Parametric Geometric Modeling

Parametric modeling uses sketches, feature-based modeling, and constraints to capture design intent. It records the entire modeling process and allows users to easily modify models iteratively. This approach is especially suitable for design tasks with strict requirements and manufacturing standards.

For instance, during detailed design, designers need to coordinate dimensions, parts, and assemblies to develop the final product, often requiring multiple revisions. Parametric modeling supports this by automatically updating the model when sketches are adjusted. However, during the conceptual design phase, parametric modeling can be cumbersome for quickly creating initial models. Despite this, parametric techniques are invaluable for building BIM component libraries, enabling users to define and generate various parametric components efficiently.

(4) The Era of BIM Modeling

Building Information Modeling encompasses three main aspects. Narrowly, it refers to a digital model that contains both geometric and non-geometric attribute information. More broadly, BIM also simulates dynamic building information based on these digital models. With the growing adoption of BIM, its scope has expanded further to include project management based on BIM data.

Major CAD software developers are increasingly integrating BIM modeling capabilities into their platforms, based on their understanding of BIM’s essence. For example, Bentley Systems has developed BIM software tailored for infrastructure projects, built on their MicroStation CAD platform.
