Although the construction industry developed before the manufacturing sector, its adoption of information technology significantly lags behind. However, both industries share similar development directions and trends. Inspired by concepts such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Product Information Modeling (PIM) from manufacturing, the production of building products should embody the following key characteristics:
(1) Establishment of secure, standardized, and universally applicable product information
(2) Integration of product definitions and data throughout the entire product lifecycle
(3) Effective management and maintenance of information generated across all business processes

In 2002, Autodesk introduced the concept of Building Lifecycle Management (BLM), which spans the entire construction process—from conceptual design through demolition or reuse—using digital methods to create, manage, and share information about capital assets.
BLM closely resembles PLM by integrating and processing Building Information Modeling (BIM) data on platforms like Concorde to address business challenges throughout a building’s lifecycle. Combining PLM principles with the unique aspects of the construction industry, this article outlines the fundamental meaning of BLM as follows:
(1) BLM is a value-driven concept aimed at enhancing construction projects
(2) It covers the entire lifecycle of construction projects, including planning, decision-making, design, construction, and operation phases
(3) At its core, BLM focuses on comprehensive information management throughout a building’s lifecycle—creating, managing, sharing, and utilizing data to maximize its value
(4) The implementation of BLM relies fundamentally on specialized software systems
Currently, enterprises and governments within China’s construction industry are actively promoting full lifecycle management (BLM) for construction projects. BLM represents the prevailing trend and mainstream approach in construction project management. Built on BIM technology, it provides digital methods for information creation, management, and sharing, establishing the most effective model for managing construction projects.
