Like many countries, South Korea has a number of organizations dedicated to Building Information Modeling (BIM). Today, we will introduce some of the key BIM-related organizations in Korea:
Building SMART Association of Korea
The Building SMART Association of Korea originated from IAIKorea, which was established in 1998. While the international IAI organization contributed to improving interoperability in the construction industry through research and exchanges, IAIKorea struggled due to limited IT adoption in construction, lack of industry focus, and insufficient government support.
As interest in BIM technology grew in the Korean construction sector, IAIKorea aligned itself with the international BuildingSMART organization and rebranded as the Korean Building SMART Association. This marked the beginning of their efforts to promote BIM technology across Korea.
Founded in April 2008, the Korean Building SMART Association aims to advance research, development, dissemination, and practical application of BIM technology and advanced construction IT. Its primary activities include:
- Research and development of BIM application technologies
- Collection and distribution of BIM-related information
- Training programs for BIM technology implementation
- BIM consulting services
- Carrying out BIM projects commissioned by government agencies and private enterprises
- Facilitating exchanges with domestic and international research institutions and industry organizations
- Organizing and participating in seminars, exhibitions, and other events
- Publishing news and updates on BIM technology
- Issuing academic journals
Korean BIM Association
Established in October 2010, the Korean BIM Association was created to strengthen BIM research and education within the academic community. Its goal is to widely promote BIM knowledge and research, bridging communication gaps between academics, experts, non-experts, suppliers, and users, thereby advancing BIM technology in Korea’s construction industry.
The association’s council includes professionals from various sectors such as government agencies, construction companies, universities, design firms, IT companies, and state-owned enterprises. It provides a platform for industry professionals to engage in academic exchange and collaboration.
The main activities of the Korean BIM Association focus on:
- Organizing academic conferences, BIM forums, and exchange meetings
- Publishing professional journals, paper collections, and BIM-related books
Korean Association for Building IT Integration
The Korean Association for Building IT Integration was founded in July 2011 as a non-profit organization under the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Its mission is to unify the various IT technologies developed across different construction fields to create synergy and enhance efficiency.
The association is dedicated to advancing IT integration technologies and promoting their practical application in engineering projects throughout South Korea. Key activities include:
- Conducting academic research
- Carrying out investigations and studies
- Organizing exhibitions, promotional events, and press conferences related to IT integration in construction
- Publishing professional journals, paper collections, and BIM-related books
- Technical development initiatives
- Maintaining communication with domestic and international organizations across industries
