BIM Q&A: How Effective Is BIM in Project Applications?

Is BIM technology truly effective? Opinions vary—some say yes, others say no. However, many projects domestically have already implemented BIM technology, providing clear insights through their applications. Here are two notable examples:

BIM Q&A | Is BIM really useful? Survey on the Application of BIM in Projects

Application of BIM Technology in Zhuhai Grand Theatre

The Zhuhai Grand Theatre, which opened on New Year’s Day 2017, features some of the most advanced acoustics, lighting, and stage design in China. Addressing these complex challenges during the design phase was critical. Issues such as seating arrangements, seat dimensions, and visual sightline analysis needed careful consideration.

Designers utilized the BIM platform to create families for seats and other facilities, integrating them into the overall 3D model. By parameterizing seat size and spacing, they were able to simulate the viewing experience from each seat. This approach allowed them to optimize seat layout and dimensions effectively. The use of BIM technology significantly enhanced both the efficiency and quality of the design process.

Application of BIM Technology in Suzhou “Central South Center”

The “Central South Center” in Suzhou stands at 729 meters tall and poses considerable design challenges. The project’s complexity involves a heavy workload across multiple disciplines. Traditional design methods would have made managing project documents extremely difficult.

The project owner compared conventional management strategies with BIM-based management and ultimately chose a collaborative BIM platform for design work. This platform enabled various design teams to develop accurate 3D models collaboratively.

Throughout the design process, the architectural and structural teams minimized conflicts arising from inconsistent functional requirements and structural layouts by using clear 3D models. Equipment specialists efficiently resolved numerous hard clashes through 3D collision detection.

Regarding deliverables, the owner, design institute, and construction teams coordinated, communicated, and built using a unified model file. This reduced issues related to delayed communication and unclear drawings. Additionally, reliance on traditional 2D CAD drawings was significantly decreased, resulting in improved file management efficiency.
