BIM Q&A: Challenges Hindering the Development and Adoption of BIM Technology in China

Currently, the use of BIM technology in China is primarily focused on the design phase. Compared to developed countries, China still faces a considerable gap in both the advancement and widespread adoption of BIM technology. There remains significant potential for further exploration and value extraction from BIM. The main factors limiting the growth and promotion of BIM technology in China are outlined below:

BIM Q&A | Why hasn't BIM been promoted? The current constraints on the development and promotion of BIM technology in China

1. Limited Government Support: The development and application of BIM technology in China are still in their infancy. Design firms and construction companies currently gain relatively little profit from BIM adoption. Research institutions face challenges in securing funding for BIM-related projects, and the practical outcomes are difficult to translate into productivity gains. Increased financial backing from government agencies is essential to boost enthusiasm for both theoretical and practical BIM research within the industry.

2. Incomplete BIM Standards and Specifications: For BIM to be effectively applied throughout the entire lifecycle of a building—from planning and design to construction and operation—unified BIM standards and guidelines must be established. Collaborative work depends on the seamless exchange and sharing of data across all stages. Therefore, there is an urgent need for data conversion standards tailored to China’s specific context, such as the adoption of IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) general standards.

3. Insufficient Technical Support for BIM Software: Currently, BIM software faces several challenges, including poor collaboration between different professional modules, lack of detailed functional design, and incompatibility with China’s national conditions. The absence of unified standards across various software types makes it difficult to achieve comprehensive model integration and linkage.

4. Project Risks: Many construction projects in China operate under tight deadlines. Early adopters of BIM technology often face the risk of technical issues that could potentially delay construction schedules. This risk acts as a deterrent for wider BIM adoption during its developmental stage.
