BIM Q&A: The Future of BIM and China’s Policy Landscape for BIM Technology

Since the advent of BIM technology, the Chinese government has introduced a series of policies to support its application in engineering projects. In many cases, local governments have mandated the use of BIM technology for publicly funded projects.

In 2011, the Ministry of Housing released the “Outline for the Development of Information Technology in the Construction Industry from 2011 to 2015.” Two years later, in 2013, it issued a draft letter inviting feedback on recommending BIM technology in the construction sector. This draft emphasized the importance of integrating BIM throughout the entire lifecycle of large-scale government-funded projects.

Further progress was made in 2014 with the release of the “Guiding Opinions on Recommending the Application of BIM Technology in the Construction Field” and the “Several Opinions on Recommending the Development and Reform of the Construction Industry.” These documents played a significant role in promoting BIM technology across the country.BIM Q&A | Is there a future for doing BIM? What is the policy environment for BIM technology in China?

The Chinese government officially recognized the necessity of promoting and popularizing BIM technology in the construction industry starting in 2011. Since then, a series of related policies have been introduced, steadily improving BIM standards nationwide. By the end of 2016, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development issued China’s first national standard for BIM application, which was expected to be implemented in 2017.

Alongside strong governmental support, various design and construction firms have actively pursued BIM software research to boost their competitiveness in the industry. Currently, BIM technology is developing in an open and encouraging environment. It is widely believed that significant breakthroughs will soon lead to the widespread adoption of BIM.

According to recent reports, the adoption rate of BIM technology and related software in China is projected to grow substantially over the next five years, positioning China as one of the fastest-growing countries in BIM application worldwide.
