BIM Q&A: Exploring the Development and Current Global Status of BIM Technology

In China, Building Information Modeling is commonly referred to as BIM, an abbreviation of Building Information Modeling. Over the past decades, BIM has seen continuous advancements and widespread adoption across both developed and developing countries. In the United States, efforts to integrate BIM technology into engineering and construction have intensified, resulting in significant cost savings in labor, materials, and machinery. By promoting building informatization and optimization, the overall economic efficiency of projects has greatly improved. Furthermore, the U.S. has advanced BIM technology by introducing the concept of evolving from 4D to 5D BIM at a national level.

BIM Q&A | What is the current status of BIM technology application? The Development and Current Status of BIM Technology from a Foreign Perspective

Currently, although BIM technology has not yet achieved full adoption in the United States, its coverage rate has reached an impressive 90%.

The South Korean government has introduced strategic plans to promote the use of BIM technology, highlighting its critical importance. Early in this century, South Korea issued the “BIM Technology Application Guidelines,” which played a major role in popularizing BIM and guiding industry professionals who were previously unfamiliar with its use. By 2017, BIM technology had gained unanimous acceptance among stakeholders and construction industry personnel.

In May 2011, a UK government report advocated for the widespread use of BIM in the construction sector, aiming to achieve comprehensive 3D BIM information management within five years. The UK government has since continuously refined and standardized BIM implementation policies. The UK BIM Standards Committee has been instrumental in supporting and enforcing these policies. By encouraging design firms to integrate BIM with traditional design standards, the UK has significantly advanced the practical application of BIM technology.

Singapore’s adoption of BIM technology in construction closely follows South Korea’s lead. Both countries recognized BIM’s importance at the start of this century and acknowledged its ability to enhance project development efficiency. Singapore has focused on the practical deployment of BIM, expanding its use through targeted policies and subsidy programs to accelerate strategic goals. By 2015, Singapore aimed for BIM technology adoption rates of at least 80% in engineering projects.
