The Singapore International School Bangkok Thonburi Phase II project expands the campus space dedicated to junior high school students, located within the original Phase I grounds. In this phase, the architects aligned two buildings along the rear edge to create a large shared green activity space.
The school’s key functional areas include classrooms, an auditorium, gymnasium, library, administrative offices, faculty and staff rooms, and communal spaces.

The architects’ primary design goal was to create a spatial environment that encourages students to learn through their surroundings, offering freedom to move and play within varied internal settings. The building exterior is linear, featuring an 8-meter-wide two-way corridor in front of each classroom. This corridor functions both as a communal area and a streamlined circulation path.
To ensure ample natural light and ventilation, the plan is divided into two sections with an additional hall situated between them, allowing sunlight and natural airflow to penetrate deep into the building.

Due to urban planning regulations, the buildings are separated into two parts with restricted height. However, the architects envisioned the structure as a unified backdrop to the landscape, connecting the sections through a continuous horizontal façade.
Building A is positioned near the entrance, featuring an auditorium on one edge. Its side wings unfold with covered walkways designed to welcome students and visitors, seamlessly connecting to the building. At the far end of Building B lies a sports arena.

The front-facing halls of Buildings A and B are specially designed with ventilation control systems that respond to daily weather conditions. Under normal circumstances, the halls operate in natural ventilation mode by opening windows on both sides to promote air circulation.
When PM2.5 levels are elevated, an axial flow fan on the hall’s roof works alongside filters to bring in fresh air, transforming the hall into a positive pressure environment. Meanwhile, grilles at the base of the façade allow air to exit. This setup creates a transitional social space with natural light and reduced heat gain.
The halls also feature horizontal fins and gradient opaque walls, offering occupants clear views of the outdoors while providing protection from harsh weather.

The wing hall includes tiered seating and serves as a theater space in conjunction with the library located below. The supporting structure of the green roof doubles as a staircase, connecting the landscaped ground area to the rooftop.
The project’s elliptical layout integrates landscape and architecture, creating an activity area with varied terrain that encourages diverse behaviors. For instance, the sunken courtyard at the building’s front functions as a circular amphitheater accessible from both sides.

This school embodies an experimental design approach, creating versatile spaces accessible to all students at any time. Each area is fully utilized to stimulate and enhance the learning experience.
