The primary goal of delivering BIM models is to provide a comprehensive data resource that supports various stages of the building lifecycle. To maintain data integrity, it is crucial to preserve the original data format and minimize any data loss caused by format conversion. Proprietary formats used by BIM software—such as Autodesk Revit’s RVT and RFT—are acceptable. However, to enable easier browsing, querying, and broader application in design delivery, it is advisable to also offer several common, lightweight data formats like NWD, IFC, and DWF.
Deliverables generated from BIM models often represent the final outputs, highlighting the importance of universally accessible data formats. Therefore, it is recommended that these outputs include standard formats such as PDF, DWG, AVI, WMV, and FLV to ensure broad compatibility.
When BIM models are delivered internally within an organization, their primary use is for reviewing and archiving the final delivery data of specific projects. They also serve as valuable resources for building enterprise model libraries, including standard models and components derived from projects. For project final delivery reviews and archiving, models should be submitted in the same formats required for external commercial collaboration. Internally, the focus should be on the model’s reusability—using the proprietary data formats of the BIM software applied during design submissions, the proprietary formats commonly used within the enterprise, and universal lightweight formats that support easy browsing and querying.
BIM deliverables encompass various data formats depending on their content. These include the BIM design model and its associated export reports, BIM coordination models with simulation coordination reports, BIM browsing models, BIM analysis models with respective reports, traditional 2D views exported from BIM, and BIM print output formats. Below is a table illustrating the original model file formats and delivery formats provided by Revit software, serving as an example of BIM application outcomes:
