BIM coordination primarily involves two key aspects: horizontal coordination and vertical coordination.

Horizontal coordination refers to the collaboration among various disciplines throughout the design, construction, and operation phases. During the design stage, each discipline often works independently, which can lead to conflicts due to insufficient communication. For example, mechanical and electrical pipeline layouts may conflict, especially in shared pipe gallery areas, because there is no unified platform to coordinate and integrate the efforts of all disciplines.
In the construction phase, a coordination platform that consolidates professional construction information is essential. This platform facilitates coordination between different trades and construction processes, enabling activities such as scheme discussions, implementation planning, safety management, and process simulation. During the operation and maintenance phase, horizontal coordination is reflected in the integration and synchronization of multiple systems based on BIM models, ensuring effective building management.
Vertical coordination focuses on the seamless connection between different project stages and within each phase. The design process is typically divided into preliminary design, construction drawing design, and detailed design, often completed at separate intervals or by different design teams. This division can cause significant information loss, leading to misunderstandings and errors in interpreting design intent.
Additionally, information can be lost during transitions from design to construction and from construction to operation and maintenance phases. These challenges arise due to the absence of a robust vertical coordination platform that guarantees effective information transfer and preservation throughout the project lifecycle.
The effectiveness of BIM’s coordination capability depends largely on the amount of accurate and integrated information within its model. As the building lifecycle progresses, accumulating more data and insights, BIM’s coordination strength naturally improves, enhancing collaboration and overall project outcomes.
