Currently, BIM software is predominantly developed and used by three major foreign companies: Autodesk, Bentley, and Dassault. Meanwhile, several domestic software companies are actively creating localized solutions tailored to the needs of Chinese technicians. Below is an overview of the key products offered by these leading software providers.
(1) Autodesk’s BIM Software
Autodesk offers several main BIM products, including Revit, Navisworks, and Civil3D. Revit focuses on BIM modeling for building construction. Its standout feature is the dynamic relationship between components, views, and annotations. Any modification to a component automatically updates related parameters, which are then reflected across all views to ensure model consistency.
Navisworks is another Autodesk BIM tool, known for its compatibility with most BIM file formats available today. It supports fundamental functions like model integration, browsing, and review, as well as advanced capabilities such as clash detection and 4D construction progress simulation. Navisworks serves as a multidisciplinary integration platform for designers and offers owners an interactive way to experience and evaluate project outcomes.
Civil3D is built on the AutoCAD platform and targets civil engineering projects. It provides a 3D design environment based on terrain data, facilitating the design of highways and railways, road corridors, site grading, earthworks, gravity and pressure pipelines, among others. Thanks to AutoCAD’s widespread use, Civil3D benefits from users’ familiarity with 2D drafting, making it broadly accepted in the industry.
(2) Bentley’s BIM Software
Bentley’s software solutions primarily serve sectors such as architecture, transportation infrastructure, public utilities, and network communications. Their offerings are built on the MicroStation platform and include specialized applications like PowerCivil for civil engineering, RailTrack for rail systems, SewerCad for sewer networks, gInt for geological data management, and RMBridge for bridge engineering, among others.
(3) Dassault’s BIM Software
Dassault’s CATIA is recognized as one of the world’s most advanced mechanical design and manufacturing software suites. It holds a dominant position in industries like automotive and aerospace. Within construction engineering, CATIA is mainly applied to projects involving complex structural forms and ultra-large-scale buildings.
