During the design review process, SketchUp and Rhino remain the most popular modeling tools for architects. SketchUp is primarily used for simplifying and standardizing building form designs, making it ideal for prefabricated building schemes. In contrast, Rhino excels at modeling complex spatial surfaces, which is valuable for intricate building form designs.
SketchUp
Modeling Features: SketchUp builds models by creating points that form lines, lines that form surfaces, and surfaces that are pushed and pulled into solid bodies.
Advantages: It offers a simple interface tailored to the design process, aligning well with architects’ conceptual needs. The software provides an efficient modeling approach and comprehensive 3D presentation tools, making models easy to modify.
Limitations: SketchUp focuses solely on architectural forms without component-level information. It cannot handle complex surface 3D modeling or perform BIM functions such as model measurement and data analysis without secondary software development.
Rhino
Modeling Features: Rhino creates models by connecting points into lines, lines into surfaces, and surfaces into solid bodies.
Advantages: It uses powerful NURBS curve modeling, suitable for designing various non-standard building forms. Rhino generates smooth, precise curves for complex shapes while consuming less computer memory.
Limitations: Like SketchUp, Rhino only models architectural forms without component data. Its 3D renderings are not highly realistic, and BIM functions such as measurements and statistical analysis require additional plugins.
Revit, ArchiCAD
Modeling Features: These platforms utilize parametric component modeling.
Advantages: Both are professional BIM software solutions. They build architectural forms from components enriched with detailed information and support collaborative BIM workflows.
Limitations: Their modeling processes are complex and less conducive to quick scheme creation by architects. Additionally, implementing BIM functions like model measurement and data analysis often requires secondary software development.
