In 2018, GMP Feng Gekang, Marg and Partner Architects won the architectural design competition to create the three pavilions of Dong’an Lake Sports Park. The completed complex features three new sports and leisure venues that will serve as competition sites for the upcoming World University Games.

The new Dayun Park, the centerpiece of “Dong’an New City,” is located in the heart of Longquanyi District, east of Chengdu’s city center. The three sports venues are grouped around a central square within the complex. The largest multi-purpose sports hall can accommodate 18,000 spectators. The small ball hall integrates cultural, leisure, and public fitness functions, while the swimming and diving hall features two standard 50-meter pools, a diving pool, and a fitness center—all arranged around the vibrant central plaza.

The three venues are square in shape and connected by a shared base. Facing the open square, indoor training facilities for basketball, table tennis, and badminton are complemented by restaurants, shops, and parking areas. The exterior features a striking louvered curtain wall made of silver aluminum elements, which creates a dazzling effect from afar. These aluminum louvers gradually open toward the center of the curtain wall, revealing the unique forms and colors of the different functional spaces inside. Each building has its own color coding, helping visitors easily navigate the site and identify their location within the sports complex.

The louvered structure continues onto the roof, enclosing the technical roof components and ensuring the complex’s iconic design language is recognizable from above. Between each building and the base, the glass curtain wall recedes inward, forming distinct entrance areas for each pavilion.

The site borders two major urban transit arteries on its north and west sides. From an urban planning perspective, Dong’an Lake Sports Park is designed for easy access from these main transportation routes. The angular arrangement of the three buildings creates dynamic interactions between indoor and outdoor spaces and complements the adjacent sports stadium. The quieter indoor areas provide spaces for meetings and fitness activities. Ultimately, the project offers a diverse mix of functional buildings that support both professional and recreational sports while establishing a new leisure destination for Chengdu residents.
