During the development of BIM technology, reliance on various related software is inevitable. The rapid advancement of information technology, coupled with the complexity of construction projects, has led to the emergence of numerous BIM application software.

BIM is a cutting-edge technology actively promoted within the construction industry. It involves multi-party participation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and multi-stage management, which means no single software or suite of software can address all challenges.
Currently, there is no standardized, scientific, or systematic classification method for BIM software. However, BIM software can be temporarily categorized into three groups based on their purpose: modeling software, application software, and platform software.
BIM modeling software forms the foundation of BIM technology. It is through this software that BIM models are created, making it essential for BIM professionals. These tools primarily support the rapid development of BIM models across various disciplines by leveraging powerful parametric design capabilities and extensive built-in family libraries.
When deciding on the technical roadmap for BIM core modeling software for a project or enterprise, the following guidelines may be helpful:
1. Autodesk Revit is preferred for civil engineering projects.
2. Bentley’s built-in image library suits industrial buildings and public facilities.
3. DigitalProject is recommended for projects with unique shapes and complex structures.
BIM application software focuses on delivering specific functions within the BIM workflow. Examples include green building analysis tools such as GreenBuildingStudio, IES, Echoect, and PKPM; equipment and pipeline analysis software like Hongye and Bochao; detailed design software including Tekla and MagicAD; structural analysis tools such as ETABS, Robot, STAAD, and PKPM; and comprehensive model clash detection software like Autodesk Navisworks, Solibri Model Checker, and Bentley Projectwise Navigator.
Platform software primarily supports on-site BIM technology services and management. Established platforms include Luban Management Cockpit, Guanglian Da BIM5D, and Germany’s iTWO. These platforms integrate diverse construction project data within the information model, enabling all stakeholders to conveniently query, extract, and analyze data at any time.
