BIM Explained: What Does BIM Stand For and What Is Its Definition?

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is commonly understood as a digital representation of a building’s information. Let’s break down the meaning of BIM by examining each of its three letters:

BIM Q&A | What is the definition of BIM? What do the three letters that make up BIM mean?

B stands for Building. It’s important to clarify that “building” here does not simply mean a house. BIM is not limited to designing structures with four walls and a roof. This common misunderstanding arises from the word’s etymology, where “building” typically refers to a house. However, to truly understand BIM, consider “building” as the act of constructing. BIM is a process that applies to architecture, infrastructure, civil engineering, landscaping, and other large-scale projects.

I represents Information. This information is embedded throughout every aspect of a project, which is why BIM is often described as “intelligent.” Projects contain an enormous amount of data—from costs and performance ratings to predicted lifespans. BIM allows all this information to be visualized before construction begins and helps track potential issues throughout the project’s lifecycle. Essentially, BIM brings all these details together in one place.

M stands for Modeling. This refers to creating a comprehensive model that covers every aspect of the building and its associated information. Models set standards and measurements for construction projects, display the final appearance and effects at smaller scales, and continue to exist throughout the building’s entire lifespan. Additionally, these models serve as reference tools for homeowners, assisting with maintenance, operations, and decision-making after construction is complete.

According to the National Building Information Modeling Standards Project Committee in the United States, BIM is defined as a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building. The American BIM standard (NBIMS) further defines BIM as:

BIM is the digital representation of a construction project’s physical and functional characteristics;

BIM serves as an information-sharing database related to construction projects, providing a scientific foundation for decision-making throughout the project lifecycle;

BIM acts as a collaborative platform that enables all project participants to input, extract, and update relevant information as needed at various stages, ensuring coordinated cooperation among stakeholders with different roles.
