BIM stands for Building Information Modeling. It is a technology that integrates both geometric and non-geometric information related to building projects. Experts and scholars have identified several key technical features of BIM, including:

1. Unlike traditional CAD software, BIM software can carry non-geometric information of project components. This includes spatial parameters, material types, and unique identifiers. As a result, BIM not only functions as a versatile 3D modeling tool but also enables conflict detection between components and supports in-depth energy consumption analysis.
2. Parameterization is central to BIM modeling. Instead of relying on points, lines, and surfaces, BIM uses parametric entities for modeling. It integrates design models with behavior models, allowing for real-time updates and synchronization across different views whenever changes are made.
Common BIM software includes:
1. Autodesk’s Revit and Navisworks: Revit is primarily used during the design phase, offering powerful modeling capabilities and a variety of presentation styles. It also supports site analysis, clash detection, and prefabrication during construction. Navisworks reads multiple BIM data formats and enables project teams to aggregate various engineering files, providing a collaborative platform for real-time access, annotation, and improved decision-making.
2. Bentley’s MicroStation and ProjectWise: These platforms focus on comprehensive solutions across the entire lifecycle of public infrastructure projects. They cover all stages from planning and conceptual design to detailed design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
3. Dassault Systèmes’ BIM suite: This includes CATIA and DigitalProject. CATIA is renowned as the world’s leading mechanical design software with a strong presence in aerospace, aviation, and automotive industries. It offers advanced modeling, execution, and information management capabilities, making it especially suitable for complex shapes and very large-scale buildings.
