Currently, the fundamental characteristics of BIM are generally recognized as information completeness, information correlation, information consistency, and collaboration.

1. Information Completeness. Beyond representing three-dimensional geometry and topological relationships of construction projects, BIM technology also stores and transmits comprehensive engineering data. This includes decision-making information from surrounding municipal websites such as transportation and routes; design details like object names, component types and quantities, construction materials, and equipment specifications; construction process data including schedules, cost control, quality management, as well as resources such as labor, materials, and machinery. Additionally, it captures operation and maintenance details like equipment maintenance schedules, durability, frequency, and safety performance, along with logical relationships between engineering objects.
2. Information Correlation. A key advantage of BIM lies in its parametric design capabilities. By adjusting the parameters of components within the model, new versions can be generated seamlessly. This high degree of correlation ensures that consistent parameters are linked across all components. When one element is modified, the entire model automatically updates to reflect these changes, enhancing work efficiency while maintaining the completeness and accuracy of the information.
3. Information Consistency. BIM models encompass data throughout the entire lifecycle of a construction project. Information across various models at different stages remains consistent. All stakeholders extract and input data based on a shared BIM model. Moreover, the information can be updated and expanded at each stage, eliminating redundant data entry and minimizing errors. This process guarantees coherent and consistent information sharing and transmission, effectively preventing “information silos” between phases.
4. Collaboration. Construction projects typically involve many participants and extended timelines. BIM’s collaborative platform enables all parties to work together efficiently. Stakeholders can link, update, and modify information on a shared platform to ensure smooth information exchange and file sharing. This fosters full communication among teams and supports accurate, timely data transmission throughout the project lifecycle.
