BIM Q&A: Pros and Cons of Autodesk Platform Software Explained

When discussing BIM software platforms, Autodesk is undoubtedly one of the most recognized names. Based on both the author’s personal experience and feedback from online users, here is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of BIM software on the Autodesk platform:

BIM Q&A | How is the BIM software on the Autodesk platform? Summary of Advantages and Disadvantages of BIM Software on Autodesk Platform

Advantages:

The Autodesk software suite enjoys widespread use and popularity, resulting in a large user base—both official and community-driven—and an abundance of resources for learning and research. Practitioners across various disciplines can easily find relevant software for in-depth study.

Its seamless integration with traditional design workflows is a major plus, as Autodesk’s BIM software shares the same origin as the widely-used AutoCAD, making the import and export of 2D data much more efficient.

The user interface is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to learn. Thanks to thoughtful interface design, well-organized functions, and extensive learning materials, even BIM beginners can quickly become proficient.

The software delivers impressive visual results. Leveraging the powerful rendering capabilities of 3ds Max, especially in terms of color presentation, the displayed models are visually stunning.

Autodesk BIM supports the creation of parameterized information models that facilitate easy associative modifications. The concept of “families,” introduced in Revit, offers excellent support for parameter configuration and custom information creation during model development.

Revit’s modeling capabilities are robust. It includes a “conceptual volume” function, and with the integration of Dynamo, users can create virtually any model, including complex and irregular components.

Cost-wise, Autodesk software is relatively affordable. Compared to other manufacturers’ products on the market, genuine Autodesk software is priced competitively, especially in China.

The platform also offers an open secondary development environment. Many domestic companies have started with AutoCAD-based secondary development. As BIM evolves, secondary development based on Revit and Infraworks is also growing, resulting in numerous useful software tools and plugins tailored for various functional modules.

Disadvantages:

One major drawback is the inconsistency in data formats and the complexity involved in data exchange. Since Autodesk’s products have been acquired or merged from different sources, each has its own file format—AutoCAD uses DWG, Revit uses RVT, and 3ds Max uses 3DS, among others. This leads to additional work during the model assembly stage due to necessary format conversions.

The software demands high hardware specifications, largely because of the complex algorithms involved and the heavy computational load from 3D model data. When the model size grows beyond a certain point, system lag and slow program responses can occur. This necessitates more powerful hardware, which increases both purchase and maintenance costs.

The number of available family libraries is limited and requires frequent expansion. While the Revit “family” library concept adds convenience to BIM modeling, new project requirements and evolving design concepts continually emerge. Existing family libraries cannot always meet these fresh demands, necessitating the creation, downloading, or purchase of new families before starting new projects.

Finally, the demand for specialized functionality is still developing. Taking road and bridge engineering as an example, many bridges feature irregular structures that require mass modeling in Revit. However, models created with mass modeling often lack strong associative links, making updates and coordination difficult. Additionally, the design approach does not fully incorporate route mileage and elevation data for modeling.
