Bentley, an American company founded in 1984, has seen its user base rapidly grow in China over the past two years, despite not being as popular as Autodesk.

Bentley’s capabilities are unquestionable, with widespread adoption and promotion internationally. Numerous large-scale projects in the United States utilize Bentley products, and over 90% of Fortune 500 engineering companies employ the Bentley platform. The company’s business scope is extensive, with over 400 software products covering nearly every engineering specialty, including oil and gas, metallurgy, steel mining, factory facilities, construction, parks, railways and transit, geographic information systems, roads and bridges, municipal infrastructure, water conservancy, hydropower, and more.
In essence, Bentley offers dedicated software solutions and services for almost all aspects of BIM applications. Their software is highly specialized, aligning well with current industry trends that emphasize the need for multiple software working together on large, complex projects.
Bentley’s software architecture is officially divided into four main domains: Geospatial, Civil, Building, and Plant. Each domain includes numerous applications, with some overlap between domains. These applications are built on two major technology platforms:
- MicroStation: A 2D and 3D drawing and modeling platform named in reference to AutoCAD. It offers powerful modeling capabilities and serves as the foundational modeling platform for all Bentley modeling software products. This relationship is similar to how the popular Hongye series municipal software in China relies on AutoCAD.
- ProjectWise: Bentley’s flagship collaboration platform, enabling seamless teamwork across all Bentley software. It also supports collaboration with third-party software such as Revit and AutoCAD, as well as commonly used workplace applications like Microsoft Office.
