BIM Q&A: What Is the Origin of BIM and What Are Its Key Components?

In 2002, Autodesk acquired Revit Technology, a pioneering 3D modeling software company. This marked the first time the term “Building Information Modeling” (BIM) was used together, giving rise to the widely recognized acronym “BIM” we know today. Since then, BIM technology has been extensively and deeply integrated into construction project management. It is also noteworthy that similar concepts to BIM emerged in the manufacturing industry around the same time and had already been applied since the 1990s, driving technological advancement, boosting productivity, and enhancing competitiveness in manufacturing.

BIM Q&A | How did 'BIM' come about? How many aspects does the definition of BIM technology include?

The definition of BIM technology is generally understood to encompass four key aspects:

(1) BIM serves as a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of building facilities. It provides a comprehensive description of the engineering project’s physical and functional attributes. Based on a three-dimensional geometric data model, BIM integrates parameterized information such as related physical details, functional requirements, and performance criteria of building facilities, enabling information interoperability through open standards.

(2) BIM acts as a shared database that facilitates information exchange throughout a building’s entire lifecycle. Stakeholders involved in planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance can access the necessary data from this shared digital model. The information is continuous, real-time, reliable, and consistent, forming a trustworthy foundation for all tasks and decisions from conceptual design through to demolition.

(3) BIM technology provides a parametric management approach and supports collaborative workflows across planning, design, intelligent construction, and operation and maintenance phases. This approach enables integrated management across various construction engineering specialties, significantly enhancing management efficiency and minimizing losses at every stage of project execution.

(4) BIM is also an information technology that relies on specialized software applications. At different project stages, various stakeholders extract, apply, and update relevant data within the BIM model using BIM software. They assign updated information back to the model to support and reflect collaborative work within their areas of responsibility, thereby improving the efficiency and quality of design, construction, and operational processes.
