BIM software for architectural design primarily includes tools for conceptual design, 3D building modeling, visualization, and information modeling. During the initial design phase, architects and clients work together to optimize plans using preliminary 3D models and environmental renderings. Notable software in this category includes the Onuma Planning System and the professional planning tool Affinity.
For complex and large-scale buildings, specialized geometric modeling software with BIM-compatible interfaces can be used to analyze building shapes. Examples include SketchUp and Rhino, which are widely used for studying building surface and curtain wall geometries.
During the architectural design phase, clients often assess building proposals through rendered images. BIM-based architectural visualization software can simulate realistic building effects by rendering detailed 3D models, providing timely feedback for design modifications. In China, Autodesk’s 3ds Max is commonly used, alongside software like Lightscape, which specializes in light and shadow effects.
Once the main building concept is finalized, the project moves into detailed architectural design and documentation. BIM software at this stage must support building model creation, construction drawing production, and prefabricated component management.
