BIM Q&A: Understanding IFC Standards and Their Application in China

In practical applications of BIM technology, the development of IFC standards stands out as the most advanced. The IFC standard (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open standard for building product data integration, sharing, and exchange. It was published by the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) and has gradually become the foundation for exchanging and sharing building engineering data across software platforms.

The development and implementation of the IFC standard follow the STEP standard, an internationally recognized product model data exchange protocol developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), officially coded as ISO10303. This standard provides a neutral framework for describing product data throughout the entire lifecycle of a product model, independent of any specific software system.

BIM Q&A | What are IFC standards? How is the use of IFC standards in China?

Currently, the most mature IFC standards cover nine construction-related fields: architectural design, construction process management, facility and equipment management, electrical wiring, HVAC, structural component design, structural analysis, pipeline design and fire prevention, and building control.

The IFC standard encompasses information throughout the entire lifecycle of building products, supporting data sharing and conversion at every stage. It is currently the most detailed and comprehensive specification for describing construction industry data. The standard organizes and manages information using a hierarchical modular structure divided into four levels: resource layer, framework layer, sharing layer, and domain layer. Each level contains multiple modules, which in turn consist of entities, rules, types, functions, and enumerations. A key principle is that each level can only reference information at the same or lower levels, never from higher levels. This design ensures an orderly flow of influence between layers and guarantees the stability of information description.

As an international industry standard that has matured in recent years, IFC standards are widely applied in architectural design, building planning, construction processes, and electronic administrative management. For example, Singapore’s national e-government drawing review system mandates that all building structural design schemes be submitted as building information models. By integrating building requirements with review schemes, the IFC-based data models enable automatic detection of regulatory violations, improving construction industry management and highlighting the increasing importance of IFC standards.

In contrast, the use of IFC standards in China remains in its early stages. Currently, no building information collaboration platform based on IFC standards exists domestically. However, given the vast construction market and the growing demand for multi-level, diverse, and customized application technologies, some leading construction enterprises have expressed clear needs for data application platforms and standardized information. For instance, Shanghai Modern Design Group is raising funds to develop an enterprise data application platform based on IFC standards, aiming to integrate software across industries, facilitate information sharing, and establish collaborative workflows.

The comprehensive development of IFC standards supports horizontal data exchange across various industry application systems, while also managing data vertically throughout the entire lifecycle of construction projects. With the ongoing trend in the international construction industry, information technology is poised to become a key competitive factor among enterprises, and IFC standards are expected to see broader adoption and development.
