BIM Q&A: Understanding the Transition from BIM 1.0 to 2.0

As the industry transitions from BIM 1.0 to BIM 2.0, government involvement as a promoter is essential. The government must actively advocate for BIM technology and provide comprehensive support in areas such as project supervision, auditing, and design review. Adjustments to laws, regulations, and policies related to construction bidding management are necessary to guide BIM’s development, encourage its sustainable growth, and implement demonstration projects.

In addition, construction associations have a responsibility to promote BIM within the industry. By coordinating various stakeholders, these associations can establish industry standards, facilitate information sharing, organize technical exchanges, and provide BIM training to advance the adoption of BIM technology.

Construction companies need to recognize the current state of BIM development, as they are the primary beneficiaries of BIM technology and directly influence project quality, timelines, and design expectations. Likewise, design agencies will gain from BIM advancements by continuously enhancing their technological capabilities to better serve construction enterprises. Therefore, collaboration between construction companies and government bodies is crucial to effectively promote BIM and drive its widespread adoption.

BIM Q&A | How did BIM 1.0 transition to 2.0? The leap from BIM 1.0 to 2.0

BIM 2.0 represents an inevitable evolution in the architectural design industry. Leadership teams within design institutions must actively promote BIM 2.0 without overstating its capabilities or becoming complacent after initial successes. Continuously enhancing the design team’s skills is key to advancing BIM 2.0 adoption.

Currently, BIM design in China remains in its early stages, with legally binding design documents still primarily consisting of two-dimensional drawings. However, it is anticipated that standardized 3D models will increasingly gain prominence, and their supporting functions will become more evident. For the foreseeable future, 2D construction drawings will continue to play a major role, and integrating both 2D and 3D approaches will deliver greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Designers must therefore strengthen their 2D design skills to effectively apply their knowledge and craftsmanship when working in 3D environments.

Transitioning from traditional 2D design methods to 3D BIM design can be challenging for experienced design agencies, as it requires a fundamentally different mindset. When leadership and technical staff lack familiarity with new technologies, experienced designers become essential guides. Embracing BIM 2.0 and developing new standards and workflows based on hands-on experience are critical to successfully adopting these innovations.

While some individuals may quickly master new modeling tools, the greater challenge lies in achieving proficiency across entire teams. Unlocking each team member’s potential is vital, with skilled designers leading practical training on real projects. By progressing together, collaborating closely, and learning from hands-on experience, design teams can effectively bridge the gap from BIM 1.0 to BIM 2.0.
