In recent years, the development of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology has significantly expanded its application across various stages of architectural design. In China, BIM technology has evolved beyond its initial roles in theoretical research, model construction, and pipeline optimization. It is now extensively applied throughout building planning, design, construction, and operation and maintenance phases. Universities, research institutes, design firms, and construction companies have all engaged in BIM applications and research tailored to their specific needs.
BIM technology introduces not only advanced tools but also new workflows, industry standards, and regulations. Efficiently leveraging network connectivity and digital information to support engineering projects is a critical challenge we face today. Although BIM has been in development in China for some time, its economic and social benefits remain somewhat limited. As a technology that supports comprehensive lifecycle management of building information, the widespread adoption of BIM in the construction industry is undoubtedly set to grow in the future.

Architectural design requires close collaboration among various disciplines to integrate their contributions effectively. However, due to professional specialization and limited experience among design personnel, coordination challenges often lead to design changes that jeopardize project completion. To address this, many design agencies have implemented multiple layers of review and cross-checking of drawings during the design process. While these measures increase workload, issues still persist.
Two main problems contribute to these challenges: first, it is difficult for professionals to access the latest updates from other disciplines in a timely manner; second, design flaws are often concealed and not easily visualized. As design work becomes more specialized and projects grow more complex, the number of participants—often from different companies or locations—increases, making communication more difficult and hampering the accuracy and timeliness of information sharing.
Currently, many large public buildings are fully designed using BIM technology due to its advantages. When BIM is widely adopted in residential building design, it will generate significant economic benefits for design firms and offer substantial convenience to construction companies. BIM has consistently played a vital role from the initial architectural design phase through to the ongoing operation and maintenance of buildings.
Implementing BIM technology enables effective resource planning, financial risk control, energy savings, and cost reductions throughout the entire lifecycle of engineering projects, encompassing design, construction, and operation and maintenance stages.
