In our country, the challenges faced in construction project progress control stem from multiple factors, with one of the most significant being outdated technical methods and management approaches. Historically, traditional techniques have driven improvements in project schedule management, but they are no longer sufficient to meet today’s complex demands.

The advancement of information technology within the construction industry has introduced new tools and techniques for managing projects. Building Information Modeling (BIM), recognized as the leading technological trend for the industry’s future, offers innovative solutions to these challenges. BIM enables seamless information sharing and lossless data transfer throughout every phase of a construction project—from planning and design to construction and operation—delivering timely, accurate, and comprehensive data across the project lifecycle.
With features such as integration, 3D visualization, simulation, interactivity, and dynamic optimization, BIM fundamentally transforms traditional project management, which often relies on text-based documents and 2D drawings. This shift significantly enhances both the quality and efficiency of project oversight. By focusing on lifecycle management, BIM supports each stage of a project by providing tailored information according to specific needs, thereby improving management effectiveness throughout construction.
BIM’s impact on the future of the construction industry is profound. It is already widely adopted in developed regions such as Europe, North America, and Japan, where its value has been clearly demonstrated. Internationally, BIM is primarily applied during design and construction phases, with some usage extending into operation and maintenance.
In China, BIM adoption is mainly concentrated in the design and construction stages. However, many implementations remain superficial, often limited to converting 2D drawings into 3D models without fully leveraging BIM’s potential benefits. Overall, BIM application in China is still in its early stages, with much untapped value and significant room for growth—especially during the construction phase, which remains under-explored. As information technology continues to evolve within China’s construction sector, BIM’s role and value in project management will increasingly become evident.
