The Zhengzhou Grand Theatre is situated at the heart of the Zhengzhou Citizens’ Public Cultural Service Area. It comprises four independent theaters and their associated facilities: the Song and Dance Theater, the Music Hall, the Multifunctional Hall, and the Opera Rehearsal Hall. The complex houses 1,687 seats in the Song and Dance Theater, 884 in the Music Hall, 461 in the Opera Rehearsal Hall, and 421 in the Multifunctional Hall.
As the premier performing arts venue in China’s Central Plains region, the Zhengzhou Grand Theatre embraces the concept of the “Yellow River Sailing Shadow, Art Boat.” Its design evokes a majestic ship that spreads civilization, navigating the Yellow River and grounded on the earth. Through architectural language, it presents grand artistic epics set in contemporary time and space, reflecting the vastness and grandeur of Central Plains culture.
At night, the building’s dazzling interior lights shine through the expansive glass curtain wall, transforming the “sail” into a giant curtain that opens. The silhouettes of audiences inside become faintly visible, vividly expressing the theater’s artistic essence as a performance venue.

This ambitious project is a complex, large-scale performance venue distinguished by four main challenges:
1) Functional Complexity: Integrating the four theaters into one comprehensive building involves managing multiple functions, high foot traffic, and complex circulation paths. Careful planning ensures each theater’s functional layout and smooth pedestrian and logistics flow.
2) Acoustic Complexity: Each of the four halls has distinct acoustic requirements. The design addresses these individually, ensuring outstanding sound quality within each space while preventing sound interference between halls.
3) Structural Complexity: Spanning 204 meters along its longest side, the building features a large span. A unique hybrid structural system combines peripheral steel trusses, roof slab trusses, and three concrete single tower structures that act as truss supports. Various structural transitions, including column support, Y-shaped columns, and lap columns, are employed.
4) Fire Safety Complexity: The four performance halls require specialized fire safety measures, including specific fire compartmentation, evacuation widths, number of exits, and evacuation distances. If fire compartment sizes exceed conventional limits, performance-based analysis is conducted.

The facade design features varying sail curvatures and diagonal textures, streamlined into irregular double-curved surfaces. Using 3D modeling and parametric design, multiple facade element layouts were evaluated. The final choice was 2×3 meter vertical modular elements that can be lifted during construction. This approach balances the spatial flow inspired by the “Nine Bend Yellow River” with standardized production, simplified construction, and cost savings.

The first hemispherical concave facade skin draws inspiration from traditional palace doors with hemispherical copper nail shapes, blending tradition with innovation. It utilizes self-supporting aluminum square tubes shaped freely without keel constraints, finished with hand-painted antique bronze textures. These layers reference Xia-Shang culture, Yellow River heritage, and local opera, offering viewers both a visual and psychological connection to history.

The innovative “waterdrop” skylight features an inner reflective surface that guides light efficiently, reducing weight, cost, and maintenance compared to traditional glass surfaces. The roof structure combines a steel grid, lightweight steel frame panels, and TPO waterproofing. This design enhances waterproof safety, improves wind resistance, lowers waterproofing costs, and boosts roof sound insulation compared to conventional upright lock edge steel roofs.

Since its completion, Zhengzhou Grand Theatre has hosted over 20 provincial and municipal delegations and major performances such as the 2021 Zhengzhou Spring Festival Gala, the opening ceremony of Yellow River Culture Month, and large-scale dance dramas. It has also proudly held the 29th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Award Ceremony and various cultural events, earning widespread acclaim.
Looking ahead, the Zhengzhou Grand Theatre aims to thrive as a hub for performing arts and cultural enrichment, playing a vital role in elevating the city’s cultural image. It stands as a cultural landmark and key pillar supporting the vision of “Cultural Zhengzhou, Civilized Zhengzhou.”
