BIM Q&A: Exploring Software Compatibility and Interoperability with BIM

Currently, the Revit tool is not yet widely adopted, so other drawing software remains necessary. Research is underway to explore whether designs created in other software can be converted for use with Revit. This includes investigating the exchange of information between Revit and other design programs, aiming to leverage Revit technology to overcome the limitations of traditional modeling software. Synchronizing the modeling process from 2D to 3D can reduce modeling time and costs. Additionally, Revit allows for more detailed modifications and adjustments to the geometry of complex objects, supporting further analysis, simulation, and construction management.

This article examines the conversion and use of commonly used 3D drawing software—SketchUp, ArchiCAD, and Revit—and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of importing their files into Revit:

1. SketchUp and Revit

BIM Q&A | What software can BIM communicate with? The interoperability between BIM and other software

When importing SketchUp models into Revit, Revit cannot identify individual object information nor access detailed geometric properties such as materials defined in SketchUp. As a result, materials must be redefined within Revit. SketchUp constructs models using basic points, lines, and surfaces, combined into component groups. However, Revit cannot interpret group objects and requires users to manually redefine the properties of each model element, which is time-consuming and complex. These limitations highlight the challenges of converting models from SketchUp to Revit.

2. ArchiCAD and Revit

BIM Q&A | What software can BIM communicate with? The interoperability between BIM and other software

ArchiCAD and Revit are both products associated with Graphisoft, with ArchiCAD developed earlier as the pioneer of BIM’s virtual building concept in 1987. Today, over 100,000 architects worldwide use ArchiCAD. Revit, on the other hand, integrates advanced software tools for various disciplines and supports analysis and simulation. The two programs exchange 3D models via the IFC standard, specifically IFC2X3, which requires an external connection called ArchiCAD connectionForRevit for conversion.

When importing an ArchiCAD model into Revit, the geometric information of objects is preserved, although properties and materials can be redefined and adjusted within Revit. Both software share similar user interfaces and offer high interoperability, allowing model data to be fully transferred during conversion. Typically, the model is initially created in ArchiCAD before being imported into Revit for further work.
