To maximize the benefits of BIM technology, it is essential to develop a comprehensive implementation plan. This plan should be informed by project experience and relevant reviews. Typically, the plan is enhanced across various aspects, including organization, processes, technology, management systems, and standards.

1. Implementation Organization: Depending on the responsible entity, BIM implementation can be categorized as owner BIM or contractor BIM. The application content and requirements differ based on the organization involved. This article focuses on the owner’s perspective, referring to the project management organization within construction projects utilizing BIM technology.
2. Technology: BIM technology comprises both software and hardware components. Software serves as the technical tools, while hardware represents the underlying technical capabilities. Currently, various BIM modeling and analysis software are available on the market. In China, Autodesk Revit series software is commonly used, although it does not fulfill all application needs. Therefore, selecting BIM software should be based on project characteristics and specific requirements. The BIM team should be led by a technical leader with extensive experience in managing BIM applications in construction projects. Team members must possess BIM application skills, and sufficient database resources should be available to support the project. Additionally, the project management experience of the team members plays a significant role in forming an effective BIM team.
3. Management System: This refers to the organizational management framework for BIM implementation, including structure, roles, objectives, and functions. Examples include the BIM meeting system, role and responsibility allocation, model development requirements, and delivery protocols. These management systems are often formalized through contracts or corporate guidelines.
4. BIM Standards: When developing BIM standards, companies should reference existing industry standards and tailor them to their specific operational context. BIM standards typically cover coding, modeling, construction application, and delivery standards. Clear guidelines must be established for model creation, sharing, and exchange.
5. Other Considerations: Additional regulations may be necessary to address specific construction project types and unique application characteristics within the BIM implementation plan.
