BIM Q&A: Key Methods for Standardizing BIM Modeling

In practical applications, enterprises must develop and adhere to relevant modeling rules to effectively implement BIM technology. These rules primarily include the following:

1. Adhere to specific modeling standards. BIM technology has a relatively short history in China. Compared to international counterparts, the construction market system and industry framework in China are still underdeveloped, lacking comprehensive BIM standards. This gap makes it challenging to establish a collaborative platform that supports teamwork among all BIM stakeholders during the application process. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has released the national standard titled “Unified Standard for Building Information Modeling Application”, which became effective on July 1, 2017. With the establishment of these BIM modeling and application standards, information interruptions across various project stages can be significantly minimized, enabling seamless collaboration and information exchange among all parties involved. Currently, most implementations rely on enterprise-level standards due to the absence of widely adopted national standards. The introduction of national standards is expected to greatly accelerate BIM technology development.

2. Implement unified naming and coding rules for components. Since BIM technology spans the entire lifecycle of a construction project—not just isolated stages—information within BIM models must be shared and communicated effectively. This necessitates establishing classification standards for building components along with corresponding coding systems based on BIM technology. When applying BIM and coding components, it is essential to ensure the coding is comprehensive, complete, and orderly to create a consistent architectural language. This guarantees smooth information transmission and allows timely communication and coordination to resolve issues throughout the project lifecycle and the broader construction industry. Classifying and coding components is the foundational step in BIM application, and relevant authorities must prioritize its implementation. Currently, most classifications depend on software-specific coding systems, but these often fail to adapt to the Chinese market or support timely format conversions, posing significant barriers to BIM adoption in China.

3. Follow unified calculation rules. Addressing classification and coding challenges for each component greatly improves efficiency for all stakeholders in construction projects. Extracting material, type, and quantity information accurately and swiftly requires the development of standardized calculation protocols. These unified rules significantly reduce workload during critical phases such as bidding.

4. Maintain consistent workflow standards. As BIM technology advances, component classification and coding standards ensure information exchange, while unified calculation rules enable precise quantity assessments. However, practical application requires a clearly defined sequence of operations. Relevant departments must establish authoritative workflows that span from component coding input, through model creation, design, operation, and maintenance. At each stage, thorough processing and optimization should be performed to enable end-to-end application of BIM throughout the project lifecycle. The goal is to achieve seamless transitions between every step, where each phase builds a foundation for the next. As BIM matures, cost management should be integrated—directly linked to components—to accurately extract quantities from models, generate dynamic cost reports based on model updates, and support functions like scheme comparison and cost analysis.
