BIM technology has been developed and applied early in the foreign construction industry, with mature practices in project cost control. There are four key aspects of BIM technology in China’s construction sector that can be learned from and adapted to improve project cost control:
1. Integration of Specialized Engineering Management
In developed Western countries, professional construction management models such as general contracting, turnkey projects, and BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) are widely adopted. These models, combined with mature BIM technology, have enabled a unified and information-driven engineering project cost management system throughout the entire lifecycle. Construction industry professionals abroad are generally highly skilled, allowing for clear objectives focused on optimizing project cost, duration, and quality.
Construction management firms specialize in their fields, accumulating hands-on experience, mastering advanced management techniques, and leveraging BIM technology to enhance their capabilities. These professional consulting companies excel in comprehensive cost control—from project plan selection and estimate preparation to design optimization, budget formulation, and project execution—allowing for cost savings and streamlined management.
2. Specialized Cost Control Consulting
Cost control is a critical aspect of project management overseas. Specialized cost engineers or quantity surveyors are involved throughout the design and construction phases. In countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong, firms dedicated to cost management provide services such as cost estimation, base price development, schedule and cost control, and contract management.
Additionally, companies in developed Western nations regularly compile and publish essential project cost data to support the industry. The widespread use of the internet further enables easy access to equipment and material pricing through professional company websites, ensuring transparent and efficient information flow.
3. Advanced Information Management Control
The rapid advancement of computer technology and software applications has greatly enhanced efficiency in construction management. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) used in Western cost management is notably simple yet detailed, offering multiple advantages.
First, leveraging computer-based information management ensures efficient communication and rapid feedback. Second, the WBS provides detailed content with clear levels of reporting and defined departmental responsibilities. Finally, integrating BIM technology enables comprehensive and accurate recording of engineering management data, reducing errors that arise from experience-based cost control.
Countries such as India, a major software developer, also contribute to the development of engineering project management software, releasing numerous applications annually, including specialized cost control tools. As a comprehensive building information management technology, BIM has significantly improved construction industry efficiency and plays a crucial role throughout project implementation phases.
4. Professional Training of BIM Technicians
Internationally, BIM engineers have become essential technical experts supporting the digital transformation of the construction industry. Like project managers, they provide vital technical support for effective project management. Many universities abroad offer computer technology courses related to engineering, encouraging students to integrate BIM concepts into practical projects.
Engineering consulting firms and construction companies actively recruit BIM technicians to assist with project management and optimization. Foreign engineering projects increasingly recognize the importance of BIM professionals in enhancing the informatization and convenience of cost management. For example, Japanese construction companies emphasize a people-oriented approach, improve the skill level of technical management personnel, strengthen cost management awareness, and utilize BIM to achieve targeted project progress and cost control outcomes.
