BIM Q&A: Examples of Construction Cost Control in Leading Domestic Building Projects Using BIM Technology

China’s construction industry is embracing new opportunities and advancements by continuously integrating innovative technologies and products. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a cornerstone technology for digital construction, becoming the preferred method for enhancing efficiency and accuracy across the sector. BIM is extensively utilized throughout the entire lifecycle of large-scale construction projects in China. Below are some notable examples showcasing the application of BIM technology in the country’s construction industry.

BIM Q&A | What are the BIM cases? Application examples of construction cost control in well-known domestic building BIM technology projects

1. National Convention and Exhibition Center
The National Convention and Exhibition Center spans an impressive 1.47 million square meters, making it the largest integrated project in China and arguably the world. Its vast exhibition halls feature a remarkable “column-free” design. The general contractor implemented BIM technology to create a comprehensive 3D model of the center. By integrating and refining the main structural model alongside various professional disciplines, they conducted thorough clash detection to identify and resolve potential conflicts, effectively preventing quality issues, costly repairs, and construction delays.

2. Laogang Renewable Energy Utilization Center
Located in Shanghai, the Laogang Renewable Energy Utilization Center is Asia’s largest waste-to-energy plant. BIM technology helped reduce the design phase by up to nine months and saved millions in costs. This project met green building standards and successfully embodied the center’s goals of renewable energy utilization and environmental protection.

3. Guangzhou Chow Tai Fook Financial Center (East Tower)
Standing at 530 meters tall with 116 floors and a total construction area of 507,700 square meters, the Guangzhou East Tower has become a landmark on the city’s new central axis. BIM technology was extensively applied in construction management, resulting in increased efficiency, reduced costs, and excellent project outcomes.

4. Tianjin 117 Building
Located in Tianjin’s Binhai High-tech Industrial Development Zone, the Tianjin 117 Building reaches a structural height of 596.5 meters. The project utilized BIM to establish a comprehensive data application platform, integrating BIM model details with project management information throughout construction. This refined approach to project management set 11 Chinese records, significantly reduced costs, enhanced management, and established new construction standards.

5. Suzhou Central South Center
At 729 meters tall, the Suzhou Zhongnan Center is a super-tall skyscraper facing numerous challenges such as complex design requirements, intricate construction techniques, multiple collaborators, and a lengthy construction timeline. BIM technology addressed these challenges effectively, particularly through a collaborative platform developed with Guanglian Cloud, enabling multi-party BIM organization and management under professional consultancy. This cross-disciplinary collaboration lowered construction costs and improved efficiency, demonstrating BIM’s powerful role in managing complex projects.

6. Zhuhai Opera House
Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the Zhuhai Opera House is China’s only island opera house, designed in the shape of sun and moon shells. Autodesk BIM software was used during the design phase to facilitate digital seat layout and intelligent audience sightline analysis and simulation. This enabled precise evaluation of sightlines from every seat, allowing for quick and rational adjustments during construction. BIM 3D modeling was crucial in constructing the building’s thin-walled, large curved surfaces, providing solutions for the opera house’s full lifecycle management.

7. Shanghai Magnolia Plaza
During the construction of the White Magnolia Plaza on Shanghai’s North Bund, the BIM Technology Center of Shanghai Construction Engineering Group offered technical support. BIM-enabled information technology optimized and standardized the early-stage design and manufacturing of steel components, reducing steel waste. The use of BIM improved overall construction efficiency and led to significant savings in steel and machinery costs.

8. Beijing Phoenix Media Center
The Phoenix International Media Center, located in Beijing’s Chaoyang Park, covers 1.8 hectares with a total construction area of 65,000 square meters and a height of 55 meters. Facing the challenges of its non-linear architecture, the project team adopted BIM technology to mitigate risks, save time, and improve quality. They developed a BIM information model capable of facility management scheduling and analysis during operation and maintenance, which was handed over to the owner upon completion. BIM technology became a defining feature of this iconic Beijing landmark.

These examples represent only a fraction of BIM technology’s application in China’s construction projects. Other notable projects include “China Respect”, “Shanghai Center Building”, “Shanghai Disney”, “Wangjing SOHO”, and “Wuhan Greenland Center”. As BIM continues to be promoted and widely adopted, its influence will grow, playing a vital role in advancing China’s construction industry.
