Due to the short adoption period and low usage level of BIM technology in China, its development encounters several challenges, making it difficult to fully harness its benefits. These challenges are reflected in the following areas:
(1) Limited Understanding and Ineffective Promotion
Although BIM technology offers clear advantages to the construction industry, there remains a widespread lack of understanding within society. The benefits of BIM have not been fully acknowledged. While relevant government departments are increasingly focusing on BIM implementation, promotional efforts remain insufficient. Additionally, due to a late start and lack of concentrated application, BIM development in China has yet to gain significant momentum.
(2) Strong Industry Inertia
The construction industry, with its centuries-old history, has deeply ingrained behaviors and thought patterns. Given its many stakeholders and high public attention, the industry exhibits substantial operational inertia. Many remain accustomed to traditional 2D methods for construction projects and are skeptical of BIM adoption. Furthermore, early BIM projects often fail to fully showcase its advantages, requiring sustained commitment and patience through initial stages. Introducing new technologies into such a complex sector demands a gradual process to overcome the resistance created by entrenched industry practices.
(3) Shortage of BIM Talent and Insufficient Training
As BIM technology gains traction in China and industry focus intensifies, the demand for skilled BIM professionals is rapidly increasing. However, socialized training institutions remain underdeveloped. Although some university-based BIM research centers have been established and are conducting related studies, they fall short of meeting the explosive industry demand for qualified talents. Additionally, much of this research remains theoretical, lacking practical operational methods and real project experience, which limits the practical development and application of BIM technology in China.
