To implement BIM effectively, specialized BIM software is essential. Modeling plays a crucial role in the BIM process, which requires professional modeling software. BIM application software can be broadly divided into two categories: model creation software and model utilization software. Among these, creation software stands out for its powerful capabilities and is especially well-known among designers. The primary type of BIM model creation software is 3D modeling software, which focuses on developing 3D models. Additionally, scheme design software and geometric modeling software also fall under the category of creation software. Other BIM tools mostly serve as model utilization software.

BIM modeling software enables the creation and modification of 3D models, providing three-dimensional visual representations. The leading BIM design software comes mainly from three companies: Autodesk, Bentley, and Hungary-based Graphisoft.
In 2002, Autodesk acquired Revit, a software known for its robust features and superior usability compared to other tools. Revit has become Autodesk’s flagship BIM product, offering three specialized versions for different disciplines: Architecture for architectural design, Structure for structural engineering, and MEP for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. These three programs are widely used in architectural design.
Graphisoft saw the potential in architectural design software early on and began development in 1982, releasing the first version of ArchiCAD in 1984. That same year, Bentley in the United States launched its own BIM solution. Bentley’s Microstation TriForma software is a comprehensive architectural design tool used across various sectors including architecture, transportation, manufacturing, municipal engineering, and government agencies. This versatility has made it one of the most widely adopted architectural design platforms.
Later, Bentley expanded its platform with additional Architecture and Structural software products, further enhancing functionality and significantly improving workflow efficiency for professionals in these fields.
