BIM Q&A: Understanding Information Visualization and Its Functions in BIM

What is information visualization? In essence, information visualization refers to a set of computational techniques that leverage visual perception to enhance human understanding of abstract data. In the context of construction, visualization transforms concepts—such as architectural designs and specifications—into clear visual representations.

BIM Q&A | What is information visualization? What visualization functions does BIM have?

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a multidimensional technology for integrating model information, developed over the past decade based on existing CAD technology. It enables all participants in a project to collaborate and manage dynamically through a shared BIM platform. Various definitions of BIM exist, but here are some commonly accepted explanations:

1) Building Information Modeling involves creating building models based on diverse and relevant construction project data, simulating real building information digitally.

2) Building Information Modeling is the shared digital representation of the physical characteristics, functional attributes, and management elements of a full lifecycle engineering project or its components.

3) Building Information Modeling means establishing and using computer software models to simulate both the construction and operation of a facility. The resulting model is a data-rich, goal-oriented, intelligent, and parametric digital representation of the building. Depending on user needs, relevant data can be easily extracted and analyzed to support construction completion and facility improvement decisions.

BIM offers many powerful visualization capabilities, such as displaying building designs and enabling 3D walkthroughs in an interactive environment. These features facilitate clearer communication among all project stakeholders, especially between designers and owners. During the design phase, architects typically create plans based on the owner’s requirements and then submit these designs for review. However, traditional design tools relying on two-dimensional drawings can cause misunderstandings and communication gaps.

With advanced BIM tools, architects can provide owners with visual 3D models, showcasing design details through realistic renderings and immersive walkthroughs. This approach significantly enhances understanding and collaboration. Additionally, 3D design helps identify design errors and conflicts between different disciplines more effectively, improving overall project quality.
