BIM Q&A: Building the Basic Framework for a 5D-BIM Application Platform

The application of 5D-BIM is still in its early stages within construction engineering and remains largely unexplored in subway engineering. A crucial factor for successful 5D-BIM implementation is the choice of software platforms. While existing software offers 5D-BIM capabilities, they often lack localization tailored to specific project needs. Therefore, further development is required to adapt 5D-BIM to the unique demands of subway project management.

Basic Framework of the 5D-BIM Application Platform

5D-BIM applications should extend beyond planning and simulation to focus on practical on-site use. Its primary function involves comparing the quantities of work planned versus actual progress, building upon the functionalities of 4D-BIM.

Like 4D-BIM, 5D-BIM requires appropriate tools to transition from office environments to construction sites. These tools must align with real-world working conditions, integrate with existing workflows, enhance current tools or methods, and minimize redundant labor. In today’s mobile internet era, leveraging mobile network technology for production management is highly efficient. Consequently, the 5D-BIM platform also relies heavily on mobile network technology.

The hardware architecture of the 5D-BIM platform is illustrated in Figure 1 below:

At its core, the platform uses a centralized database connected via network links to both office and mobile terminals. This setup enables unified and collaborative data management. The overall framework of the 5D-BIM application platform is shown in Figure 2:

By harnessing the powerful computing capabilities of the server, the platform analyzes planned data from PC inputs alongside actual work data collected via mobile devices. It then generates analytical reports and visual charts. These results are accessible across PC, web, and mobile interfaces, facilitating effective use by project managers and field personnel.
