BIM (Building Information Modeling) in China refers to using information technology and methodologies to create digital models of building components. It involves parameterizing various types of information embedded within these models, resulting in a comprehensive, parameterized representation. This integrated model is then stored and managed using computer technology. BIM carries extensive data, including both the physical attributes of buildings and project management details.
Rather than merely integrating digital information, BIM leverages digital computing and extraction technologies to manage the entire project lifecycle. This holistic management approach spans all phases of information handling, providing a communication platform that enables all stakeholders involved in a construction project to share information efficiently, collaborate effectively, and ensure smooth project progression.

BIM technology has revolutionized the construction industry, with its greatest value demonstrated in detailed project management and comprehensive lifecycle oversight. However, challenges remain. These include incomplete laws and regulations, as well as a lack of standardized references and guidelines for enterprises implementing BIM, which hinders its widespread adoption.
Moreover, the initial investment for BIM implementation is significant. Currently, there is no national engineering quota standard for BIM technology, complicating project management operations. Effective BIM application also demands skilled professionals, raising the bar for construction companies. Addressing these challenges requires ongoing improvements in the legal framework, development of authoritative standards by professional organizations or government agencies, increased investment, continuous professional training, and practical application of BIM technologies to drive refinement and growth.
China is actively promoting BIM technology, mandating its use in key projects and competitions to showcase its capabilities. BIM-related standards are steadily advancing, enhancing the impact of project management. These efforts are fostering the healthy, orderly development of BIM technology, poised to transform the construction industry as a whole.
