BIM standards are still evolving, with various BIM software developed by different vendors using diverse technical platforms. Currently, no single BIM software supports the entire building lifecycle, and few products from the same company cover all stages of project construction. To enable seamless information exchange, it is essential to adopt an open, unified, neutral, and standardized BIM data format. This allows different BIM software to share information consistently. The IFC standard currently offers a viable solution for such data exchange.

Based on object-oriented data models, IFC is widely used in BIM and contains all necessary information for design, construction, and operation phases across various construction projects. The IFC standard operates independently of any BIM software platform and is computer-readable, providing an open framework for building data representation and integration. This standard addresses both horizontal data exchange between different software and vertical data management throughout the building lifecycle.

This structured approach makes it easier for others to access and utilize the data promptly. Additionally, participants can share information produced or gathered by others across various phases, ensuring smooth, ongoing transmission and collaboration throughout the entire project lifecycle.
