Key Challenges Slowing the Adoption of BIM in China Explained

BIM technology has been applied in China for over a decade. While research and implementation continue to advance, computer software is now widely used across various stages, disciplines, and aspects of building engineering—including planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. However, a significant challenge remains: information silos caused by software that fails to exchange data efficiently, timely, and accurately. This issue poses a major obstacle to the growth of China’s building information industry. Additionally, there is a lack of deep understanding of BIM technology among project stakeholders, inconsistent application standards, and a shortage of well-rounded technical professionals. These challenges collectively hinder the further development and adoption of BIM technology in China.

What are the obstacles that hinder the development of BIM in China? After reading it, you will understand

Firstly, BIM technology itself faces several challenges, such as incomplete software ecosystems, limited data interoperability, and difficulties in coordinating collaborative workflows. For BIM technology to be widely adopted nationwide, it must meet the practical needs of construction organizations. When BIM software options are limited, data exchange between different platforms becomes difficult, and users struggle to leverage BIM tools to streamline construction tasks. This naturally complicates efforts to promote BIM technology.

Secondly, the understanding of BIM technology among project participants is often insufficient. Although government policies encourage BIM usage in construction, many owners adopt it mainly to enhance their corporate image rather than out of genuine motivation to learn and apply BIM deeply. Traditional management styles and workflows among owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and labor subcontractors are hard to change quickly. This resistance leads to some work not being executed according to BIM models, causing rework, material waste, and discrepancies between the final outcome and the BIM design. Such issues hinder the effective promotion and implementation of BIM technology.

Moreover, a lack of unified application standards complicates BIM adoption. While the government promotes BIM as an innovative technology, initial understanding and practical experience remain limited. Without sufficient experience, it is challenging to develop consistent standards. Consequently, the level of BIM application across construction organizations varies greatly and lacks uniformity.

Finally, there is a shortage of skilled professionals to support BIM promotion. As a relatively new technology, BIM requires a large talent pool dedicated to its study and application. However, educational resources are limited, and universities have not yet established specialized programs focused on BIM application and management. This talent gap makes it difficult to conduct in-depth research and drive widespread adoption. Since BIM technology is still evolving in China, many of its application methods remain immature. To maximize its value, the construction industry must objectively assess BIM’s benefits, actively explore solutions to implementation challenges, and fully realize the social and economic advantages BIM offers during construction. Only through the joint efforts of all project stakeholders can BIM technology achieve sustainable growth in the construction sector.
