The overall schedule plan serves as the highest-level timeline for the entire construction project. It must be developed strictly in accordance with the construction contract requirements, clearly reflecting the project’s key milestone dates.

The project BIM planning team analyzes and studies schedule-related data extracted from the BIM model to prepare the overall schedule. Construction tasks are logically broken down, and achievable schedule control targets are set based on the capabilities of each participating unit. The start and finish dates for major milestones are established, and computer simulations are performed to allocate heavy construction equipment and manage limited onsite space using GIS and AR technologies.
The secondary schedule is developed primarily by breaking down the milestones defined in the overall schedule into more detailed tasks. This process begins by identifying the subprojects necessary to meet each milestone. Traditionally, work packages involve estimating the required personnel, materials, and machinery based on quantities derived from the BIM model, combined with the construction experience of all involved parties. Task durations are determined, followed by the creation of detailed resource plans covering funds, labor input, main machinery and equipment, as well as materials and tools turnover. Should any conflicts arise between the secondary and overall schedules, adjustments are made to the overall schedule plan only after agreement among all relevant engineers, rather than forcing unrealistic secondary schedules. Finally, the approved secondary schedule is integrated back into the BIM model as progress data, enabling a more detailed 4D schedule model.
After completing both the overall and secondary schedules, engineers from each participating unit contribute data related to their respective responsibilities and disciplines into the 4D schedule model. This collaborative effort results in subproject schedules designed to be easily understood and accepted by frontline construction personnel.
