The organizational structure of architectural structural design teams primarily includes BIM Project Managers, Structural BIM Leads, and Structural BIM Designers.

BIM Project Manager: This role is responsible for coordinating comprehensive analysis and evaluation of BIM projects. The manager oversees BIM resource allocation, plans the overall implementation of BIM projects, manages cross-disciplinary BIM collaboration, monitors project schedules and progress, reviews BIM deliverables, and assists in developing BIM application standards.
Structural BIM Lead: To effectively apply BIM technology in building structural design and support projects and enterprises, a dedicated Structural BIM Lead is appointed within the structural design team. This lead can be hired externally; however, if the design firm has an in-house BIM team, external hiring is generally avoided. Alternatively, a qualified BIM professional with strong structural knowledge from within the company’s BIM team may take on this role. Designers with solid structural expertise may also transition into this position after receiving specialized BIM training.
The Structural BIM Lead works closely with the BIM Project Manager to evaluate design projects, coordinate BIM resource investment, and assist in selecting the appropriate BIM application methods and structural BIM software for each project. They are responsible for designing structural outputs, planning the structural design schedule, creating initial BIM structural models, and reviewing models at every stage. Additionally, they address technical and application challenges related to structural BIM, coordinate BIM efforts across disciplines, and manage the integration of BIM models between different teams. They also oversee the review and delivery of structural BIM models, gather component resource data, drawings, and documents, and submit these deliverables to the BIM Project Manager or the company’s data management department.
Structural BIM Designer: Typically, enterprises hire externally trained personnel who have basic BIM skills acquired through training. The Structural BIM Designer’s main responsibilities include completing structural design and BIM modeling tasks assigned by the Structural BIM Lead. They also produce detailed 2D drawings based on BIM models to support the design process.
