BIM Q&A: Understanding Construction Simulation and Its Application in Tower Group Operations

During dynamic construction simulation, Navisworks’ TimeLiner feature plays a crucial role. The TimeLiner window links 3D models with external construction schedules, enabling the creation of plans that integrate visual timelines and cost management. The simplified workflow is illustrated in the image below.

BIM Q&A | What is the BIM construction simulation process? How can BIM construction simulation be used for tower group operations?

Furthermore, to identify more safety hazards during construction simulations, the BIM building information model combined with Navisworks’ walkthrough function allows users to explore buildings realistically and intuitively. This approach helps spot potential risks and implement protective measures to eliminate safety issues.

BIM Construction Simulation for Tower Group Operations

1. Analysis of Safety Factors in Tower Operations

When analyzing safety factors affecting tower group operations, three major elements stand out: climate conditions, safety management, and human factors. Improvements can be made by monitoring weather forecasts, strengthening safety management, and enhancing safety training. However, inherent factors related to the tower group operation itself cannot be changed once the plan is finalized—such as ensuring adequate safety clearance between towers, assessing the reasonableness of tower layout, and coordinating tower crane lifting schedules. For example, to maintain proper height differences between tower cranes, cranes may need to be raised; but due to varying construction progress across buildings, anchoring might not always be possible.

2. Principles of Tower Crane Layout

1. Prioritize functionality: the tower crane layout should maximize coverage of the material yard and the entire work area, ensuring that the working radius and lifting capacity meet project requirements.

2. Consider crane performance: ensure the tower crane can be installed and dismantled easily based on its specifications.

3. Minimize arm overlap: reduce the operational overlap between tower crane arms as much as possible to avoid collisions.

3. BIM Dynamic Construction Simulation for Tower Group Operations

Starting from the tower crane site positioning plan, a complete 3D model of the tower crane group is created using Revit software. Then, Navisworks adds a time dimension to simulate various working conditions, including initial installation heights and the addition of crane segments. Collision tests are performed to verify safety, ensuring the tower cranes operate without interference throughout the project.
