As designers, we aim to transform the office from a mere desk space into a sustainable environment enriched with diverse settings. This “Black and White Container” represents our redefined office space. Set against a monochrome backdrop, we integrate essential auxiliary functions and partition walls, creating a space that balances order and flow. This design is complemented by adaptable spatial scenes, allowing new stories and visions to continuously emerge.

The Line+ Shanghai office is situated in the Noah Wealth Center within Shanghai’s Hongqiao Business District. As our first location outside Hangzhou, we strive to create a space that combines corporate exhibitions, academic salons, and comfortable office areas. This new office not only supports our regional expansion but also elevates our corporate image with higher quality.

The Noah Wealth Center building was designed by Foster+Partners. As a premium office tower, it features elevated floor layers, ground air supply systems, and integrated ceiling solutions, providing an excellent foundation for our interior design. The end bay boasts two continuous curtain walls, offering expansive city views and abundant natural light. The golden aluminum plate at the top extends inward from the facade, ensuring architectural integrity and becoming a unique interior feature.

Similar to the Line+ Hangzhou office, we wanted this space to be more than just a place for desk work. It is designed as a venue where designers, clients, and experts can engage and inspire one another. The functional layout had to creatively accommodate an exhibition hall, a salon, and a 30-person office within less than 300 square meters. Additionally, the design addresses how to integrate the non-removable golden aluminum plates in a way that minimizes their impact on the spatial form.

△ Space Concept
The design follows the original layout logic, dividing the space into two zones: office and public. The office area extends naturally along the curtain wall, offering bright surroundings with a degree of privacy. The public zone includes functions such as reception, exhibition, conference, and guest areas.

△ Block Generation

The office and public zones are separated by a central functional wall featuring a striking black-and-white contrast. The spatial offset and visual division naturally create the main aisle.

The dark walls and floors, paired with a luminous film system overhead, define the refined character of the public area while emphasizing the displays. To maintain consistency despite varying lighting and materials, careful color selection was applied to latex paint, baked paint, and carpeting on walls and floors.

Mobile partitions enable the public area to adapt flexibly between different setups, such as regular meetings, salons, and exhibitions, enhancing space utilization.

Different configurations of the public area
To maximize usable space, all auxiliary functions are concentrated within the central dividing wall. This wall houses the water bar, printer, server cabinet, book and model display, and storage, serving both sides. It also maintains a degree of separation between the office and public zones, enriching spatial hierarchy.

The viewfinder on the acute-angled side aligns with the building’s form, allowing those in the reception area to enjoy urban views while encouraging interaction between different zones.

The contrast between the dark tones in the public area and the office’s bright white furniture and carpet maximizes natural light, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The original golden aluminum plates blend naturally into the ceiling, minimizing their visual impact. Workstations near the end window offer a pleasant environment for lunchtime breaks.

Walnut wood and brightly colored furniture stand out against the pure black-and-white environment, adding warmth and a sense of quality to the space.

In daily operations, employees move fluidly between the two zones—holding meetings, relaxing with coffee, or hosting clients. Even within the compact 300 square meters, the spatial and color transitions create a rich and engaging experience.
